HCC Travels to Grace Cathedral

  • Tuesday, May 03, 2022
  • 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Gateway Parking lot

Complementing HCC’s 2020 Zoom presentation about the art and history of labyrinths, we’ll be joined again by Dr. Lauren Artress who will lead the labyrinth portion of our tour. Grace Cathedral is home to the Modern Labyrinth Movement.

Labyrinths have appeared since the 4th century in many cultures. By walking Grace’s replica of the Chartres Cathedral labyrinth, laid in France around 1220, we’ll have an opportunity to focus on our inner peace amid a magnificent building.  Its art, history and architecture will also be revealed by one of Grace’s knowledgeable guides. Artistic treasures include famed mosaics by Jan Henryk De Rosen, the bronze Ghiberti Doors, dubbed the “Gates of Paradise,” plus  7,000 square feet of stained glass windows by noted artists with over 1,000 figures ranging from Adam & Eve to Albert Einstein. And, while the cathedral was photographed by such artists as Ansel Adams, a number of films have used the rich setting. Alfred Hitchcock, not to be outdone, filmed an abduction scene here in 1975 for his final film “Family Plot”.

Grace Cathedral’s COVID health and safety requirements are
